Ok so today I just wanted to talk about anger. Specifically teen girl anger.
Why do teen girls get angry?
Seriously I could probably keep this going on for a LONG, LONG TIME!
I get it. Not only AM I a Girl (ok woman but still...), I *GASP* used to be a teen girl.
Not only that but... *GASP* I used to/still have anger problems.
~SCENE FROM MEGAN'S TEEN YEARS~
Running up to my room, throwing myself on my bed. I grab my pillow and shove my face into it. I scream into my pillow while wet, hot tears flow down my face. I keep screaming until my throat hurts and when I'm done screaming I look around my room for things to throw. Magazines, pillows, clothes, books, & picture frames fly across the room until I finally curl up into a ball & finish it all up with a few sobs. I stare at the carpet for a long time until finally I just fall asleep out of mental & physical exhaustion.
Why did I do this? What had happened?
Honestly, I don't remember. I'm sure whatever it was it involved me arguing with my parents and then ending up in my room blowing up even more.
Why do I feel the need to blog about this?
Because Teen Girls get angry. We don't talk about it except to say that we shouldn't do it. Teen Girls are also reluctant to talk to people about it because *GASP* it means admitting that we/our lives/our families are not "Perfect".
The issue is not "That Teen Girls Get Angry".
The issue is:
"What Do Teen Girls Do When They Get Angry"
and
"What Should Teen Girls Do When They Get Angry"
James 4:1
"What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?" (NIV)
Fights, Quarrels, Anger... it comes from the battle going on within us.
So what do Teen Girls do when they get angry?
Well, if you're a teen reading this you know what applies to you. Some hold it in and get quiet. Some scream. Some cry. Some do anything and everything depending upon the situation, their mood, and what time of the month it is. (You know it's true!)
How does that work for you? For me, I can honestly say it never made it better. It always made it worse. More people got hurt & I had to deal with more consequences than before. Then I would get Even More Angry because of how it turned out and the cycle would continue.
OK, what should Teens do? Great Question because I'm still learning this.
That's right. I still deal with anger issues. I am not perfect and anger management, especially with the ones I love most, is one of my biggest struggles.
This verse has been my example verse. Who is my example of how to act? Jesus Christ. He is THE ultimate example for how I should act and REACT.
1 Peter 2: 21-23
"To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly." (NIV)
Jesus Christ suffered. He was insulted, yelled at, the Pharisees argued with him, people doubted him, thought he was crazy, told him he was wrong, hated him.... and he did not retaliate. 1 Peter 2:23 says that he "entrusted himself to him who judges justly". Basically this means "He Gave It All To God"!
How Awesome Is That! That's what we're called to do!
In the heat of the moment this can be hard, I know. We have to literally tell ourselves to STOP, BREATHE, & PRAY!
What does that prayer look like?
~MEGAN ANGER PRAYER SCENARIO~
"Dear Lord, I AM ABOUT TO LOSE IT! I need your help before I freak out even more! I'm sorry that I'm allowing this to make me so angry but will you PLEASE help me calm down. Lord show me what I need to do & say. Please help me to look at all of this clearly & calmly. Lord guide me because I need it. Thank you for everything you do for me. Amen."
I say that type of prayer often, and you know what... THAT'S OK!
God wants you to go to Him in those moments. He wants you to reach out to Him for help & guidance. Jesus gave it all to Him... so why don't you?
